Chapter 13

I’m a ball of jitters during the entire car ride and I keep glancing at my phone. No messages. Aiden parks and takes my hand, giving it a squeeze.

“Heard anything from Katie, yet?” he asks. I close my eyes with a shaky breath, unable to answer.

“I think I’m having a panic attack,” I whisper. Cold numbness is spreading from my arms to my chest. With my eyes closed, I tune in to the chatter from the people milling around the car. A clink of metal and the brush of cotton against the squeaky leather tells me Aiden has unbuckled his seatbelt. Before I know it, I’m flung into his shoulder. He encircles my panicked body with his arms and holds me so tight, it’s as if he’s trying to hold me together. I nuzzle his neck and inhale the woody scent of his cologne. It’s grounding. And just like that, the numbness evaporates. My arms tingle as the feeling returns to my fingers and for a second, I forget where we are and what we’re doing.

“It’s going to be okay,” Aiden says with warmth. His deep voice rumbles against my head and I can’t stop the small smile creeping across my lips. I pull back to look into his sincere eyes and nip my bottom lip.

“I hate being in the dark. It’s been two days… and I’ve heard nothing from her.”

Aiden’s brows knit together. Then he reaches inside his jacket pocket.

“I’m sure she’s just busy. Right now, we need to focus on what we need to do.” He pulls out a small blue box wrapped with white ribbon tied in a pretty bow.

“This is for you.”

My breath hitches as I take the box in my hands. It’s heavier than it looks. “What is it?”

I look up to catch the smirk on Aiden’s face.

“What do you think it is? Open it.”

I fumble with the ribbon and flip the box open. A flash of light blinds me and a thought crosses my mind that this is a practical joke. As I jerk my wrist, the light moves away from my eyes and I study the beautiful engagement ring staring at me.

“It’s platinum, I know you hate silver.” Aiden says, rubbing his neck. I frown at him. I don’t hate silver. That makes me sound like a spoilt brat. I just hate it that my silver necklaces tarnish when I leave them on the sink in the bathroom.

“The diamond is 1.5 carat,” Aiden continues with his cheeks reddening. I look down at the ring again, the single diamond is so shiny, every time I angle it towards my face, I’m blinded.

“Well? Do you like it?” Aiden asks. Before I know what I’m doing, I’m bobbing my head with a goofy grin.

“It’s gorgeous.” I slip it on my finger and hold out my hand to inspect it. “It’s a perfect fit… how did you know my size?”

Aiden’s whole face is crimson now. “I called your mom.”

This feels all-too real and a giddiness rushes over me as I take in the moment.
